We have been busy in the kitchen perfecting our most favorite base recipe for using with our Hey Baby lotion blends! This base is versatile enough to be used as a body butter, but can be tweaked with slight additions to make it perfect to use with our Lullaby Lotion, Mama's Belly Blend, and Bum Balm recipes. The recipe below is enough to make 4 kits (containing 3 2 oz jars) for a total of 24 oz of lotion.
This bum balm has been a life saver in our households with 2 littles in diapers between Janae and I. It's not too thick-not-too-thin texture makes it easily spreadable but easy to wipe off and start fresh also. Lavender and Melaleuca soothe irritated skin, shea and coconut moisturize, and the zinc oxide provides a moisture barrier to keep further irritation at bay.
The Lullaby Lotion contains my favorite rest promoting combo of lavender + cedar wood. Roman Chamomile and orange essential oils would be a great addition to this, but we just kept it simple. Feel free to use your favorites or blends from your EO company.
Mama's Belly Blend: This blend is recommended for post delivery soothing of stretched out, tired skin, and is packed with oils that promote healthy skin, circulation, and fluid regulation. You could also just add the recommended oils straight to a liquid carrier oil in a dropper bottle and add a dropper full to your daily lotion when applying, but this recipe incorporates it into a EO packed cream.
We definitely recommend making a big batch at once even if you don't have 4 gifts to give....we love the convenience of having an extra pre made kit on hand ready for last minute gifts, or save the extra base lotion in a large mason jar for your own body butter!
Here's the base recipe:
2 Cups Shea Butter
1 Cup Coconut Oil
4 T Beeswax
4 T Aloe Vera
4 T Jojoba Oil
2 T Rose Water
(2 T Zinc Oxide for Bum Balm)
Essential Oils Used: Lavender, Melaleuca A., Cedarwood, Cypress, Lemon, Jasmine, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Geranium, Frankincense*, Helichrysum*, Myrrh* *optional)
Step 1: Heat shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat until melted. Remove from heat and add aloe, jojoba, and rose water and whisk to combine.
Step 2: Pour off approximately 1 cup of mixture for bum balm into a 2 cup glass measuring cup, whisk in zinc oxide while mixture is still warm. Transfer to the bowl of a stand mixer and allow to cool slightly, but do not refrigerate.
Step 3: Meanwhile, refrigerate the remaining base mixture until returned to solid.
Step 4: With the stand mixer running, slowly add 20 drops Lavender EO, and 10 drops Melaleuca A. Mix until zinc oxide is well incorporated and there are no lumps. (Per 2 oz jar, use 5 drops of lavender and 2-3 drops of Melaleuca A.)
Step 5: Pour into 2 oz labeled Bum Balm jars and cool. The mixture will be a thick liquid at this point but will firm up as it cools.
Step 6: Remove chilled base lotion recipe from the refrigerator and whip in stand mixer until fluffy (2 minutes).
Step 7: Divide the whipped mixture into 2 separate bowls: 1 for Lullaby Lotion, and 1 for Mama's Belly Blend
To the Lullaby Lotion portion: add 20 drops of Lavender EO and 10 Drops of Cedarwood (remember this makes 4 (2 oz) jars of lotion so if you are making less use 5 drops of lavender and 2-3 drops of Cedarwood). Whisk until combined and divide between your 2 oz labeled jars.
To the Mama's Belly Blend: add 10 drops each of Tangerine, Geranium, Lavender, Cypress, Lemon, Jasmine, Grapefruit (and optional 2-5 drops each of Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Myrrh). Whisk until combined and divide between your 2 oz labeled jars.
(This blend is recommended for post delivery soothing of stretched out, tired skin.)
When whipping up your base lotion, don't worry if it seems to be thinner than you'd like, it will set up firmly once jarred.
Your gift will be the envy of all expectant mothers! Better keep this stocked up because once word gets out, you'll have friends lining up to get their hands on one of these!
