I have to admit. I am a lotion and potion kinda gal. I love me a good night cream. Two years ago if you would have told me I'd be making my own night cream and slathering my face with coconut oil at night I would have laughed in your face. But then I met Frankincense and everything changed. Some may not be a fan of the feeling of coconut oil on their face, but I love it. I wake up in the morning feeling like my skin is silky smooth and glowing. I recently tried switching back to my previous (expensive) night cream and found it coming up short compared to this.
The added essential oils boost the hydration of the coconut oil with natural compounds that smooth wrinkles (frankincense, helichrysum, patchouli) soothe irritated skin (lavender, melaleuca) and brighten/improve overall appearance (lemon, geranium).
Here is my super simple Night Cream Recipe that we whipped up yesterday in the Drip Drop Shop Kitchen. (Ok, so we don't actually have a company kitchen so we just borrowed mine).
1 cup cold organic coconut oil
10 drops Frankincense
10 Drops Lavender
5 Drops Patchouli
5 Drops Helichrysum
5 Drops Geranium
5 Drops Melaleuca
*2 Drops Lemon
*Lemon Essential Oil along with all citrus oils are known to increase photo sensitivity so it is not recommended for use on skin less than 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
(Label available in our Green Spring Bath and Beauty Sheet).
The first time I tried to make this, I was an essential oil/natural living newbie and the interactions I had failed to mention the importance of using coconut oil in a solid state. Let me tell you, it was a Hot. Oily. Mess. So do yourself and your kitchen a favor and chill that coconut oil before attempting.
Whip Coconut Oil in a Stand Mixer until fluffy and any solid lumps are incorporated. Add essential oils slowly. Store in a glass container. Here in AZ the heat is no friend to this recipe. I keep mine in the frig in the summer months, but during our 3 months of "winter" I can actually leave it in my bathroom without it melting. If you have a tried and true face cream recipe using essential oils, please share in the comments below!
Peace, Love, and Oils!
